About Olympic

Principal's Message

Welcome to Olympic Middle School, home of the Eagles! At OMS, our mission is to achieve academic growth and social responsibility. We do this by following our school-wide expectations to “Be Safe, Be Kind, and Work Hard”.

We are thrilled to be back to in person instruction, 5 days a week. While welcoming our students back is exciting, we recognize that our students have had a tremendous disruption in their education and even their social-emotional development over the past 18 months. Our goal this year is to get students on track academically and social-emotionally.

Every day starts with homeroom where students will take part in a social-emotional curriculum, Second Step, that teaches social skills, self care, and coping skills. They will also do morning meetings and class challenges to help our students build positive connections with their peers and a sense of community in the classroom. They will have access to our grade level counselors who will also be leading social skills groups. We have a True North counselor on campus for families interested in mental health services. If you are interested, please contact your grade level counselor for information for a referral.

Our students will have 4 core classes, ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science, as well as an intervention block. Intervention is called WIN, “What I Need”, which targets either reading or math for support or acceleration. This year across the Shelton School District we are focusing on teaching the Priority Standards. Priority Standards represent the essential learnings a student must master to advance to the next grade level. This does not mean that other Common Core Standards are eliminated, but that our instructional time is prioritized to teach the essential standards with more depth and breadth.

Students also have a PE/Exploratory class. All students have PE 2 to 3 times a week (2 days a week for ½ the tri, 3 days a week for ½ the tri). Students then have an Exploratory class. They will have one trimester of each Art, Tech, and Music. This will allow students to experience all of the Exploratory classes.

Finally, we also offer an after school program and for the first time this includes competitive sports! Our after school clubs and activities are in partnership with ESD 113 and the 21st Century grant. They offer clubs like Fun and Games, Sumobots, Anime, Student Leadership and other fun activities. They also offer homework clubs and tutoring. Clubs change every 6 weeks. Our competitive sports include Boys Flag Football, Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Co-Ed Track. We are also doing a Boys and Girls soccer program which runs as an intramural and focuses on building skills rather than competing. We are very excited to be able to offer competitive sports at the 5th and 6th grade level!

As we all know, COVID has not gone away and we are still living in a pandemic. In order to keep our doors open and in person instruction going, we must maintain a focus on safety and implement specific safety protocols to protect students and staff. All students and staff will be required to wear a mask at all times while in the building, with the exception of eating at lunch. Students will move through the day in cohorts. The homeroom they start in will be the group they move with throughout their classes. They will also sit with that cohort at lunch and play in their designated area with this cohort at recess. This helps us to limit the possibility of a spread if a COVID exposure occurs at school. We will also be offering more hand sanitizing and opportunities for handwashing as well as a continued focus on social distancing.

We look forward to having your student here at OMS. Students grow and change so much during their 5th and 6th grade years and we are excited to be a positive part of their educational experience and personal growth.  If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out.
